Inside the walls of Nicosia: a one-day walking guide
17 October 2026
The historic centre of Nicosia (Lefkoşa) sits inside star-shaped walls built by the Venetians in the 16th century. With narrow streets, inns and bazaars, it is perfect to explore on foot.
Start at the Kyrenia Gate
The northern entrance of the walls, the Kyrenia Gate, is a good starting point. From here, walk to Atatürk Square and into the fabric of the old town.
The Great Inn (Büyük Han)
Built in 1572 during the Ottoman period, Büyük Han is one of the most important caravanserais on the island. Today its courtyard hosts cafés and craft shops — a lovely spot for a coffee break.
Selimiye Mosque and the Bedesten
With its striking Gothic architecture, Selimiye Mosque was originally built as the Cathedral of St. Sophia. The neighbouring Bedesten carries traces of many eras and occasionally hosts cultural events.
The Arasta and the market
The Arasta street and the Municipal Market are the most enjoyable stops for local produce, halloumi, olive oil and souvenirs. In the afternoon, drop by an art gallery or a workshop.
